CARE GUIDE

AS A GERMAN HERITAGE BRAND, JOOP! STANDS FOR SOPHISTICATED DESIGN AND FIRST-CLASS QUALITY.

These values are also central components of our sustainability philosophy. For us, sustainability encompasses not only environmentally friendly production methods, but also a long product life. To ensure that you can enjoy your favorite JOOP! item for as long as possible, we have compiled the most important care tips for you in our Care Guide. Whether high-quality leather items or everyday denim: with a little love and care, you can extend the life of your JOOP! products.

HOW TO WASH

WASH LESS, WEAR MORE

Frequent washing can cause clothing to wear out more quickly and colors to fade prematurely. Depending on the material, it is often sufficient to air out the clothing and let it rest for a while. Using a fabric spray and spot stain treatments can also work wonders in giving your favorite garment the freshness it needs.

TAKE CARE: SAME SAME BUT DIFFERENT

Simple, yet often overlooked: pay attention to the information on the care label. Depending on the material and product type, care instructions may vary. Sort your laundry according to the respective care requirements and separate light colors from dark colors.

We generally recommend using environmentally friendly detergents and avoiding fragrance additives and bleaching agents to protect the environment and your textiles. Be careful with fabric softener too: it coats the fabric with a thin film and can therefore impair positive fiber properties such as breathability and moisture absorption.

KEEP IT COOL

Wash your clothes at the lowest possible temperatures. This not only protects the fibers, but also the environment.

HOW TO DRY

It is best to let your clothes air dry. This is not only gentler on the fabric, but also saves energy. Carefully pull the damp clothes into shape and hang them up out of direct sunlight to reduce additional creasing and protect the colors from fading. Wool products are a minor exception; for more information, see our Care Guide for wool products.

To reduce wrinkles, we recommend steaming your clothes, as steam treatment is gentler on fibers than the pressure exerted during ironing.

HOW TO STORE

Store your clothes in a dry place away from light. Small lavender sachets or cedar blocks in your wardrobe can be helpful as a natural protection against pests such as clothes moths.

JOOP Sustainability Cotton

WOOL

With its heat-regulating fiber structure, wool is the perfect companion for the colder days of the year. Due to its breathable, wrinkle-resistant, and water- and dirt-repellent properties, the rule of thumb for care is “less is more.” In most cases, it is therefore sufficient to air the clothing.

If washing is necessary, it is advisable to turn the garment inside out before washing and use a laundry bag to protect the fibers. Wash the garment according to the care label instructions and use a special mild detergent and wool detergent. Heavy wool garments such as coats can be carefully cleaned with a damp cloth or taken to a dry cleaner.

Due to the elasticity of the fibers, wool products should ideally be dried flat to preserve their structure and fit – the same applies to subsequent storage. Avoid using a dryer to prevent the fabric from becoming matted. If small fiber knots (“pilling”) form over time as a natural result of fiber friction during wear, these can be gently removed with a suitable pilling comb or pilling shaver.

COTTON

Unlike wool, cotton does not have self-cleaning properties and should therefore be washed regularly. However, if you have only worn your favorite T-shirt for a few hours, it is sometimes sufficient to hang it up in the fresh air and then use a fabric spray.

When washing, it is also advisable to follow the golden rules: use lower washing temperatures if possible, turn the garment inside out, and wash it with similar colors. This not only reduces the risk of shrinkage and color fading, but is also more environmentally friendly.

After washing, carefully pull the cotton clothing into shape and then hang it up to air dry. To prevent wrinkles, you can hang the item directly on a hanger.

DENIM

Similar to caring for wool products, the same applies to denim: wash your jeans as infrequently as possible. Washing them too often can cause them to fade, run, and lose their shape. Ideally, wash denim inside out and with items of the same color, as new jeans in particular can “bleed” or run at first. Follow the instructions on the care label and wash denim at a low temperature and spin speed. Before washing, make sure that buttons and zippers are closed.

To dry, turn the denim back to the right side, hang it up by the waistband, or lay it flat.

JOOP Sustainability Linen Fabric

LINEN

Linen is a naturally skin-friendly material known for its durability, strength, and breathability. Use a mild detergent and wash linen garments on a gentle cycle at lower temperatures.

As linen fabrics are prone to creasing, it is advisable to pull the garments into shape immediately after washing and hang them on a hanger to air dry away from direct sunlight. For a smooth finish, linen can be ironed while slightly damp, following the care label instructions. However, small creases may remain, adding to the charm and relaxed character of the linen fabric.

JOOP Sustainability Synthetic fabrics

SYNTHETIC FABRICS

Basically, the fibers in synthetic fabrics can be divided into those of natural origin and those of artificial origin. Regardless of their individual properties, we would like to share with you some basics that should always be taken into account when caring for them.

When washing synthetic clothing, it is best to use an environmentally friendly liquid detergent. Washing powder leaves residues on the fibers, which can make the fabric look dull. Synthetic fibers are generally heat-sensitive and should therefore always be washed at low temperatures on a gentle cycle. Please also refer to the individual care label. Another tip for viscose items, should a garment shrink a little: place the garment in a lukewarm water bath with gentle baby shampoo. This allows the fibers to gently return to their natural state.

Due to the heat sensitivity of synthetic fabrics, clothing should be air-dried. This prevents damage from heat and friction. This also applies to ironing. Steam the garment if possible and avoid high temperatures when ironing. Turn the garment inside out beforehand, as some synthetic fabrics can show marks or streaks from ironing.

SYNTHETIC DOWN

JOOP! is committed to not using real down. Instead, we use highly functional and partially recycled filling materials that are even better than traditional down in terms of moisture regulation, washability, and comfort.

Similar to the care of functional textiles, padded jackets should only be washed at low temperatures of around 30°C on a gentle cycle and without the use of fabric softener. Excessively high temperatures can cause the fabric to thin, become matted, or suffer other damage; the same applies to fabric softener. Make sure that you put the jackets in the washing machine with the zippers, pockets, and Velcro fasteners closed and without any tension. If present, fur collars can be unbuttoned in advance and washed separately by hand.

For subsequent drying, please follow the individual care instructions on the label. Due to the heat sensitivity of synthetic blended fabrics, we generally recommend air drying.

JOOP Sustainability Smooth Leather

SMOOTH LEATHER

Smooth leather is a high-quality material that remains durable and beautiful when cared for properly. Whether leather bags or leather shoes – regular and appropriate care is crucial to protect the leather from dirt, moisture, UV rays, and drying out.

Before caring for your leather items, you should determine the type of leather, as different leathers require different care. Soft brushes or damp cloths are suitable for cleaning to gently remove dirt. Special cleaning agents or leather erasers can be used for stubborn stains – always test on an inconspicuous area first.

After cleaning, the leather should be treated regularly, about every six weeks, with suitable care products such as creams or impregnations. Waterproofing sprays protect against moisture, but should be applied sparingly and from a distance to avoid over-treating the leather. After rain, it is important to dry the leather gently in the air and away from direct sunlight or heat sources to prevent discoloration and damage.

Smooth leather items should be stored in dry, light-protected cotton bags or shoe boxes. Acid-free tissue paper or shoe trees are recommended to stabilize the shape. Newspaper can help to gently remove moisture.

This will keep your smooth leather products supple, colorfast, and beautiful for a long time.

JOOP Sustainability Suede

SUEDE AND NUBUCK LEATHER

Suede and nubuck leather are types of suede leather that require special care due to their open-pored, roughened surface structure. Leather fats, liquid cleaning agents, and water should be avoided at all costs—as should classic shoe polishes. The more roughened the surface, the softer but also the more sensitive it becomes. Moisture and grease can cause stubborn stains that are difficult to remove. Therefore, take special care to protect your suede products from moisture and dirt by regularly applying a suede waterproofing spray.

Dry cleaning agents specifically designed for nubuck and suede leather are suitable for cleaning. Spray the products evenly according to the instructions and from a sufficient distance, allow the agent to take effect for a short time, and then brush it off with a soft suede brush. This process can be repeated as necessary for stubborn stains. For larger stains, a special eraser for nubuck or suede leather can also be helpful. Then carefully roughen the material.

A special lotion for nubuck or suede leather can be used for subsequent care. Allow the care product to soak in sufficiently, brush the leather carefully again, and finally seal it with a suitable waterproofing agent.
